Commentaires : Un spectacle de la troisième - et dernière - saison de la Old Vic Company au New Theatre (Noël Coward Th) sous la direction du trio John Burrel, Laurence Oliver et Ralph Richardson.
Commentaires longs: L'interprétation de Lear par Olivier a reçu de bonnes critiques mais pas exceptionnelles. Dans ses scènes de déclin et de folie, à la fin de la pièce, certains critiques le jugent moins mobiles que ses brillants prédécesseurs dans le rôle. L'influent critique James Agate a estimé qu'Olivier utilisait son éblouissante technique de scène pour masquer un manque de sentiment; une accusation que l'acteur a vigoureusement rejetée, mais elle lui a souvent été faite tout au long de sa carrière.

This production of King Lear puts a mother at the heart of the action - supposing that it is a queen who, weary of public office, divides the kingdom amongst her daughters. But the old woman finds it impossible to retire gracefully and as her mental faculties begin to fail she's cast out by her eldest children, as their sister prepares to lead a French invasion in retaliation. Meanwhile the Duke of Gloucester's equally ruthless son plots to steal his brothers inheritance and the younger generations align in a savage plot to mercilessly destroy their parents. But will they succeed?
